Profile

"A few months after leaving the City, I realised passive investing would be a growth industry. None of the big players would hire me, so I joined an American-owned manager, applying my economic insights to global bond portfolios.

Still, my real interest lay in using technology and rules-based investing to tilt the odds. My colleagues nicknamed me “Professor Pat Pending” (Google it). Bonds offered too few variables, so I moved into equities as a strategist at a stockbroker. It sounded glamorous, but in reality post-Big Bang brokers were filling research desks with eager youngsters on modest pay. There I created the forerunner to SmartGARP.

Ten years later, with the TMT (technology, media and telecom) bubble deflating, I’d had enough of the sell-side and joined Artemis – then managing just £500m. Two decades on, I still feel like an imposter.

Beyond work, I’m a husband and father to three grown boys. My wife would say Artemis also turned me into a private pilot, ultramarathon runner and over-enthusiastic skier. I’d argue these pursuits – demanding total focus or sheer exhaustion – are what keep me healthy and sane in a job where clients judge you daily. Long may that continue."
