Adrian manages Artemis' UK equity income strategies, alongside co-managers Nick Shenton and Andy Marsh, and has done so since he joined the firm in January 2002. After graduating from Jesus College, Cambridge, Adrian began his investment management career at Deutsche Asset Management (Morgan Grenfell) in 1983. He was appointed a director there in 1990 and head of UK equities in 1996. In 2020, Adrian received Investment Week’s ‘Outstanding Fund Manager Over 25 Years’ award.
"I joined Artemis in 2002, having started life in the City as a stockbroker back in 1979. Yes, interest rates were 17%, but no, I can’t remember much else about it… With three jobs in four years, my stockbroking career could best be described as ‘horizontally mobile’. A lifeline appeared in the form of Morgan Grenfell (subsequently Deutsche) for whom I managed pension and retail funds for 18 years.
I haven’t quite seen it all in my career – but perhaps I’ve seen most of it. Through it all, a preparedness to learn, to evolve and re-invent have been essential to my survival. While others were clamouring for internships at investment institutions, I fondly remember making lipstick cases, sweeping army camps, planting trees in northern Germany and building houses (some of which are still standing today – perhaps this is an antidote to Nick’s demolition skills…). Outside Artemis, I have been on the board of a medical charity for 17 years and, more recently, joined the board of an orchestra. What I may lack in musical knowledge, I hope I make up for in my enthusiasm."
