Andy has worked on Artemis' UK equity income strategies alongside Adrian Frost and Nick Shenton since February 2018. He arrived here after more than a decade managing money at Polar Capital where he was a partner. Having originally qualified as an accountant in 1997 at Ernst & Young, Andy worked as an analyst for ING Charterhouse and then for Merrill Lynch before a stint at Investec's investment bank as head of equity sales. Andy leads Artemis' mentoring scheme.
"My interest in financial markets grew from reading the front of the Financial Times on my childhood paper round. A teacher later persuaded me to do a computer science degree, but I soon realised a career in IT wasn’t for me – so I switched to work and qualified as an accountant in Manchester. Stock taking on Saturday mornings at windy manufacturing plants in towns like Accrington was… character building.
With ‘perfect’ timing I moved to be a food retail analyst just as the dotcom bubble (2001) was ensuring that investors lacked any interest in the ‘old economy’ sector. Naturally, just as the bubble was about to burst, I moved to analysing tech companies although I managed to publish a note – Wot No Cashflow – just before the collapse, so my accountancy degree came in handy. These lessons in the vagaries of financial markets meant I was well suited to a move into fund management firstly on a long/short equity fund eventually joining Artemis in 2018.
I co-manage Artemis' UK income strategy with Adrian and Nick, where for the three of us the watch words are ‘patience’ and ‘long-term’ – all of which are ‘virtues’ which can be forgotten in markets increasingly driven by short-termism and algorithmic trading. As a devoted football fan (Reading is my club) I believe a team is as good as its bench, so I lead on the Artemis mentoring scheme to develop the next generation of Artemis fund managers."
