Artemis SmartGARP European Equity Fund

The managers of the Artemis SmartGARP European Equity Fund seek capital growth over five years from company shares. They look for companies with what they believe are attractive share prices principally from across Europe excluding the UK. However, they may invest to a lesser extent in other countries including the UK. The managers draw on SmartGARP®, Artemis’ in-house software tool that looks at companies’ finances and helps them to identify potential investment opportunities.

The value of the investments selected by the managers could, however, fall as well as rise with movements in stockmarkets or owing to diverse factors specific to individual companies. This could mean investors may not get back the amount they originally invested.

• Rigorous stock screening: SmartGARP seeks to combat ‘information overload’ by focusing the fund managers’ attention on European companies with desirable financial characteristics.
• Pan-European: the fund invests across Europe, covering a broad spread of countries and industries.
• Objective clarity: SmartGARP provides a fact-based framework for comparing the relative attractions of shares in different markets and industries across Europe. It also subjects the fund’s existing holdings to constant scrutiny. It sends a signal to the managers when a holding’s financial situation appears to be deteriorating, enabling the managers to evaluate whether or not to sell the company shares.
• Subjective insight: before investing, the managers undertake further research to assess whether the investment case behind an investment opportunity highlighted by SmartGARP is valid.
• ESG integration: the managers use artificial intelligence to look at newsflow to provide real-time insights into environmental, social and governance behaviour. This pushes them towards companies with strong ESG credentials and/or those that are showing significant improvements.
