Our approach

Our sole objective as investors is to outperform the market and produce long-term returns for the people whose money we manage.

We have a history of recruiting and training fund managers with proven skills – and we have an excellent record of retaining fund managers. Our managers have the freedom to invest without the constraints of a single house style or process. Yet, Artemis’ policy of co-investment, and our structure as a partnership, give our managers every reason to share their views with each other. They are open, communicative and always keen to debate investment ideas.

UK strategies

The UK is a leading financial centre. It is a global hub and is home to many of the world’s most successful companies. Our five funds are established and have robust performance records. Each one is distinctive with a clear investment objective.

Our diverse range caters for a number of requirements, whether this be a need for income, a recovery story, smaller companies or long-term growth.
We are experienced investors, having launched our first two UK equity funds nearly 20 years ago.
Whilst our UK equity managers take a collegiate approach, they are free to select stocks as they feel appropriate.

European strategies

Europe is a region full of opportunities for investment and is home to some of the world’s largest companies. The range of investible companies is extensive with over 700 stocks. This provides investors with the scope to invest in large, medium and small companies.

Artemis’ two European equity funds all aim to achieve capital growth over the long-term but each has a different investment approach.
Our SmartGARP European Equity Fund employs a quantitative system to identify stocks with above-average growth and below-average valuations.
Our European Select Fund holds a focused portfolio of up to 60 high-quality companies, bought at a reasonable price.

US strategies

The US is the largest and most diverse equity market. It is home to a significant number of the most innovative, entrepreneurial and fastest-growing small companies.

The US economy is less dependent on exports than most other major economies, helping to protect its companies when growth slows elsewhere in the world.
In looking at stocks, Artemis’ US equity team believe that a risk is only worth taking if the potential reward from owning it exceeds significantly the potential loss.
This discipline allows them to look for opportunities right across the market. Not just at stocks with either a growth or value bias.

Global strategies

With around 50,000 stocks available around the world, taking a global perspective can help investors to diversify risk. Investing globally provides the opportunity for fund managers to seek out the best companies in the world regardless of where they are listed.

Artemis’ global equity funds are distinct, each with their own compelling investment case.
Our range encompasses global growth funds, global equity income funds and more specialist funds such as emerging markets.
Whilst the managers take a collegiate approach, each has the flexibility to choose the stocks they feel are the most appropriate for their portfolio.

Responsible strategies

Everything Artemis does is designed to deliver outstanding performance and service to our clients. This also defines our approach to responsible investing and stewardship.

We encourage freedom of thought among our fund managers. Each team has an individual style and distinctive investment approach. This means they incorporate relevant relevant environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors in a way that is best suited to their particular market and investment approach. These guiding principles, however, apply across our range of funds.

Stewardship: as stewards of our clients’ capital, we act in their interests by investing in companies that can preserve and enhance shareholder value.
Engagement: as an active investment manager, we develop relationships with the management, boards and representatives of the companies in which we invest – and use our shareholder votes to influence corporate culture and governance.
Analysis: we believe that returns can be enhanced by incorporating ESG factors and analysis into our investment processes alongside financial metrics.
